Pants on Fire
I had today off and what better way to procrastinate packing than to go for a swim. I was drying off and changing after swimming, and overheard some girls talking. One girl was a little older, maybe 12 or 13. The other girls were about 9. The older girl started teasing one of the younger girls about having an out-y belly button, saying it was gross and it meant she was dumb - that in-y belly buttons meant someone was smart. The little girl handled it better than I would have at that age, she replied somewhat confidently that that's not true, she's smart, her belly button didn't mean she's dumb. I could hear a bit of a ripple in her voice but she obviously knew the right response. But when the older girl walked around the corner and continued to shout out that it meant she was dumb, I whispered over to the younger girl "she's lying you know, it doesn't mean that at all," trying to encourage her to keep standing up for herself. The girl gave me an immediate "stranger danger" look so I didn't pursue it any further. But when I turned around to keep changing, a few seconds later I heard the younger girl yell out "You're LYING! It doesn't mean that. You're a liar to say that." Does that mean I'll be a GOOD parent or a really BAD one? HAR
