I've been taking swimming lessons at a local pool since January. Adult Learn to Swim 101 and now 201. I know it's optimistic to say this, but I think I may have found the one cardio exercise that I truly enjoy. Even when I used to run, I didn't look forward to the run itself. I didn't enjoy it during the run. I felt good after but that's just the result of a good cardio workout. Biking bores me. I have a strong dislike for hiking. Etc. But swimming! I look forward to it every time. I love every lap, I love the cool down and how I feel after. Maybe because swimming doesn't come naturally to me and I really feel like just being at the lessons or swimming laps on my own is a big accomplishment. I love it though, and I sincerely hope that the feeling stays. I think part of it is that I love a structured lesson once a week, and then going to the pool twice on my own later in the week to swim laps and see improvement. I always have something new to work on. I've decided that once I'm done 201, I will take 301 and then the power swim.
I swam a kilometre tonight and I think it was my easiest night yet. I really see the drills and tips from lessons starting to affect my front crawl.
The reason I took swimming lessons is coming up. On May 17 I have a mini triathlon, called a Try-a-Tri. It's here in Ottawa. First is a 100m swim, then a 11.4km bike, then a 2k run. Wish me luck!
